The “VLC” in VLC Media Player stands for VideoLan Client, and it is the most flexible media player you can get as far as being format-friendly. In other words, it really doesn’t matter what format your audio or video file is, VLC Player can play it. The VLC Media Player download is free, and no matter what format you send it, you can bet the file will play, because the number of audio and video codecs it supports is unsurpassed. And if, by chance, you should send it a file it doesn’t recognize, it will start working to try and play the file anyway. It also plays DVDs and TV data from your set-top box.

After you get the VLC player download and open it up, you’ll see a menu bar at the top with all your options on it. Just below it is a track slider that shows the progress of the media file being played. You can simply drag the track slider to the left or right to rewind or fast forward whatever you’re watching or listening to. When you’re playing a video, it will appear between the menu bar at the top and the track slider at the bottom. If you’re playing streaming content, you won’t be able to move the slider bar because VLC doesn’t “know” how long the total video is.

At the bottom of the interface are the control buttons, all of which you’ll recognize (play, stop, pause, etc.). There you’ll also find information about the name of the file being played, the speed it’s being played at, total duration of the file and elapsed time. You can increase or decrease the track’s speed too.

The VLC download gives you an all-around workhorse program that lets you watch video files, listen to audio files, and stream MPEG-1, -2, and -4 files, as well as DVDs and live video. The VLC player can also decode and display MPEG streams received from the network or video from a camera.

If you open an audio file of just about any format (including .wmv, .vob, .ts, .ps, .gm, .ogg, .mxf, .dy, .divx, .avi, and .asf) the options under the Audio menu will be enabled. You can convert audio tracts and set up various visualization schemes.

While most people use the VLC Media Player for playing files without having to worry about codecs and file conversions, some people use its capabilities for converting media to different formats. You just select “Open File” on the Media menu, select a media file and click “Open.” Once the media file is displayed, select “Convert / Save” from the Media menu. In the dialog box, select the media file and click “Convert” and you’ll see the stream output dialog box, where you can save the file in another format.

For millions of people worldwide, the VLC Media Player is their one-shot solution to handling various media files with a minimal amount of trouble. You don’t have to worry about finding codecs, or having a file converted to a more suitable format. You just give VLC Media Player the file and it plays it. It’s no wonder the VLC player download is consistently one of the most popular, with tens of millions of successful downloads to date.
